4 Steps to Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Creating a capsule wardrobe is the easiest way to update your wardrobe! It allows you to have endless coordinating outfit options while staying within a budget. You can stay on trend, on budget and remain comfortable and confident with your signature style.
A capsule wardrobe can be used for seasonal updates, work attire, entire wardrobes an even travel. It basically allows you to mix and match many different looks with a limited number of items.
I am getting ready to embark on a two-week European Cruise (Woo Hoo!). I will be visiting different countries with varying climates all in one trip… so you can imagine packing for this trip has left me in a little bit of a tizzy… but instead of overpacking (which I am totally guilty of) I will plan out a specific capsule wardrobe full of endless potential!
So how does it work… how do you create the essential capsule wardrobe? I will give you 4 easy steps to putting together your new wardrobe saver!
First: Figure out why you need this fun style trick… is it to simplify your work life? Are you traveling, like me? Do you need help through a transition (weight-loss/weight-gain)? Or are you just looking for a foolproof way to get dressed in the morning?
Whatever it is that’s motivating this project, make sure you understand what you will need from your new capsule wardrobe. Does it need to be casual, professional, breathable, versatile…
Second: Establish a baseline for your capsule. You need to start with classic pieces that will transition throughout seasons and trends. Like a white camisole or dark denim. You need some solid basics to help you transform your capsule into so many combinations.
Remember, Style is a tool for everybody! Make sure your clothing fits your body type, now. If your clothing is too loose for too tight your figure will look larger than you really are and you’re less likely to wear them! Wear clothes that flatter your shape, because when you look good, you feel good!
Third: Now that you have a solid base, start filling in some fun fashion flare. These items need to be true to your signature style. You don’t want to feel like an imposter, strutting around in someone else’s clothes!
Your style should be a visual representation of your personality! When you are choosing what to put in your closet, each item should be an extension of your personality and lifestyle. So add a little of your sparkling personality to the mix!
You can incorporate certain colors, patterns, materials into your capsule. But be consistent, only add things that “play nicely” with each other. For instance, and tweed jacket wouldn’t work with a floral blouse. Let the seasons guide you… try incorporating lavender and olive green for summer. This color combination could be found in solids or patterns and suit many different signature style types.
You can include shoes, accessories, hats, and handbags into the capsule as well!
